But...

To be frank, I'm not the biggest fan of the summer. I'm often left with an overwhelming feeling of guilt as I turn down opportunities to camp, hang at the beach, attend outdoor festivals with port-a-potties, the list goes on. I simply don't know what to do with myself in the dog days of the year.

But, I suppose there is something to be said about perpetual sunlight and a high dose of Vitamin D, so with that, let's celebrate the quieter side of summer.

This month includes an album of epic melodramatic songwriting (Daniel Romano), some existential psychedelia (Quest For Fire), a shimmer of pure pop bliss (Repartee), and an interview with Nick Thorburn, indie music pioneer and future rock star ikebana practitioner. We're also featuring music by Yu Su, who is on Genero, an all female electronic music label based out of Vancouver.

Happy listening,

Louise

And a final good morning. I uploaded the photo I'm using last night, a photo that looks off to the future or to the past depending on your perspective. Taken last October when Peggy and I were up in the Shaggin' Wagon for a last camping trip of the year up at little Silver Lake in Lassen County, in northeastern California. This photo is looking away - at what was once wonderful - our Radio3 community, but knowing that we do have each other, a relationship that came along after I was a regular on the blog.

I wrote a little (?) comment to post here today, and it follows.

Well, my friends, the Night of the Long Knives is approaching, and our time here on the CBC Radio3 blog will be coming to an end. I am forever grateful for everything I got out of Radio3, the discovery of exciting new music, the fascination with Canada, the amazing radio that came out of Vancouver and Toronto, the talented and welcoming hosts, and all of the amazing friends I’ve made on this blog. And now it goes away. They’ve told us that Radio3 failed to capture a large enough audience. I contend that Radio3 failed to capture a large enough audience because no one knew that it existed. When I first heard it, I thought it was the best radio I’d ever heard – much better than the crap that goes out over American airwaves. And yet, that’s what most of Canada listens to, the same American crap. So much for CanCon.

I have made friends from Victoria to St. John’s, have had visitors from five provinces, and I have visited and met with Radio3 fans from BC to Ontario. These Radio3 bloggers have become real, serious friends who I care deeply about, and know my life would be poorer without them.

And the music. My gosh, to have this music – Sloan, Said The Whale, The Weakerthans, Holy F, the list goes on. I’m grateful that I got to see Two Hours Traffic in Vancouver in 2009, still sad that Liam never brought the boys to do the West Coast Tour down to California. But this music was brought to me by CBC Radio3, I sought it out, and I’m so grateful for that.

But now, by Mark Macarthur’s admission, the music on the “new” “Radio”3 is to be geofenced to be Canadian only. Let’s see…I can’t listen to the music and there’s no blog to discuss the music, so just what is the goal of Radio3 anyway? Certainly not to serve Canadian artists, at least outside of Canada.

CBC Management has driven Radio3 right into the ground – deliberately. We have all witnessed the station steadily being stripped of personnel, resources, creativity, incentive, and even the music has been stripped. We went from five daily hosts, Vish, Craig, Grant, Lana, and Lisa to three, and their shifts were increased from three hours to four. We lost Lana, but got her back when Lisa moved to Radio One.

But the darkest days of Radio3 were when we lost our basement and went to the bland CBC Music website, and the other was when Craig left – and he was never replaced. Instead we had a ever changing array of fill in guest hosts who never varied from their orders of “That was, I am, Have you ever” host breaks that said absolutely nothing and never revealed any personality from the various fill in hosts. A radio station without a strong morning person? CBC Radio wanted Radio3 to fail. And when Lana moved back to Toronto, she was under their thumb, lost her theme song, her show name, and she had to walk the same walk. Only Grant, who was as much a participant in the world of Radio3 as any blogger, refused, as he clearly stated on his last day, when he preferred personality to strategy. No, CBC management got what they wanted. Steve Pratt is gone, Vancouver is just a building, and all the power is in the hands of Toronto. And they could care less about any and all of us.

But it was a glorious run. Listen to some of those long ago Listener co-hosts on Craig’s show, but listen to more than just Craig and the co-host. Listen to everything else. The wide variety of music. The stings, the announcements, the excitement that was there everyday. Trivia Tuesday, Foodie Friday, Appetite for Distraction, The Craig Norris Hour. Damn, but it was so very, very good. It may all be gone now, but we were lucky to have it to begin with, when there were some innovative thinkers at CBC that gave the “freewheeling hippies of Vancouver” free rein. If only they had really supported it.

With this, I’ll say goodbye. (I need to get ready to go to work anyway.) I’ll try to post if my iPhone will let me throughout the day, but believe me, I’ll be watching the blog. As always, I’m up for visitors here in Sacramento. Just use my Radio3 screen name and add “@comcast.net” to it.

Have a great day, have a few tears, remember the good times, and know we’ve all been made better people from this experiment. And I’m happy that my wife Peggy, who I met in 2011, got to experience a little of the Radio3 world with me. Of course, I have to give that special shout out to Grant Lawrence who did his best to make me a celebrity in Canada.

A sad day, but I guess change must come, and btw I think Radio3 could NEVER have big numbers, it was a brilliant canadian-only idea that could only plateau. Craig & I and others often discussed this.

The cultivation and improvement of the site for artists let alone users, never happened since 2010. Especially since CBC Music launched.

It certainly did plateau but maybe it plateaued where it did for complete lack of exposure. I only found Radio3 when I was looking for something about Sloan on the CBC site, and it led me to Radio3 - and that was before The Basement was even developed. Once I found it, however . . .

I have spent so much time and money following musicians that I would never have learned of if not for R3, and especially through the now-rare podcasts. R3 artists were the soundtrack to some of the most important moments of my life over the last 10 years. The joy of seeing a stranger in an R3 shirt, or introducing friends to great bands, is something that I'll always treasure. The looks on the faces of Canadian artists playing to a few people when they realized that we knew every word to their songs was priceless. R3 isn't solely responsible for these artists' success, but they certainly helped a great deal.

Makes no sense: the web is for being international. Everyone (except CBC.ca) knows that, it seems.

C.c. the Minister of Global Affairs, the old "Foreign" and previously "External" Affairs Department."

Ok, I've looked at thing a little, and minister of "Global Affairs" doesn't exist (The Dept does, but it's Dion minister of Foreign, and another for International Trade).

Sappy Blog Feelings Story:

If it weren't for the blog "community" (*shudder*, I hate that word, don't know why) when I moved to Regina in 2010, I wouldn't have met the handful of people who I still call good friends to this day (one of them was a groomsman at my wedding!) They made Regina an interesting place because when I moved there, it seemed shitty. But they went to shows and festivals and so on and we had fun (and still do!). From those R3gina ppl, I met the Winnipeg ppl... and indirectly, the wman who is now my wife! Crazy. And, I've met people in Calgary and Ontario from this blog, albeit, maybe only once or whatever.

To sum, blog was a good space for a canadian music fan to connect with like minded individuals. We had a good run. I'm not mourning the loss, it is what it is. I got more out of it than I ever thought.

Rock & Roll will never die. Support your local scene (go to shows or buy records and t-shirts, whatever you like to do). Be excellent to each other.

I really don't know what it would be of my life without Radio 3. I knew about it for over six months since the day I met Davoud and he told me about it, but I didn't really join after a few weeks after my dad passed away and I finished college (I do not recommend going through those two things at the same time), but the day I started talking here, I felt so welcome and engaged with such awesome people, I knew I would never ever let it go. I met Grant in Vancouver a few weeks later and I was so mesmerized by how kind he was I still think that was one of the happiest days of my life.

Despite the distance and the short time I spend there, there has not ever been a day in which I don't feel part of this, and I'm forever grateful. You guys are my safe, happy place. It's not an exaggeration when I say you're the Hogwarts to my life with the Dursleys, magic and adventures included (Harry Potter, for those who don't Harry Potter often). I'm really afraid to wonder what would be of my life without you. My R3 friends (even when we've only hung out for two hours or never really hung) are an intrinsic part of my life, and most definitely, my favourite part of it.

I'm sorry to see this space go, bu I'm hoping we'll remain close (I'm sorry if I message you. I hope it doesn't feel intrusive). I think we have. I know I don't have much to offer, but I'll be always be there for everyone of you, no matter if you need a bed here or you just need someone to hear your rant about your work day. You guys mean the world to me.

Change of subject; Ottawa is sort of "bike city" in that there are a lot of cars, but bikes have been used more and more over 30-40 years. I know both sides, bike and drive.

Now when riding, I make sure that people give me the usual one-metre leeway -- that they don't pass me any closer. They don't because of my techniques, wearing bright reflector shit, etc

But now Ottawa cops want to enforce that one metre, and are using "beepers" and threatening a fine and demerit points. Link to come.

Regarding reginula's blog photo: I am reminded of how I was introduced to Dan Mangan. It was on one of Grant's podcasts. He told a story about a Christmas party he was having. (I may get a few details wrong because it from pure memory.) He said everything was going great. The music was being provided by Said the Whale (? Does that make sense?) Anyway, there was a good groove going and someone asked if this guy dan could sing a song or two. Grant was all like, 'I don't know. It could be a bit of a downer/bummer.' But he was convinced to let it happen and then was blown away. He told that story and then played a Dan Mangan song and I was blown away. It was the story that made me listen that much closer. That personal touch has been lost for over a year now and today the last vestiges of human contact will be gone. Oh well.

"Absolute idiocy and hypocritical enforcement with a raging double standard," wrote Nick O'Brien on Facebook. "Guess they needed some revenue and what's a better way than extorting citizens already taxed to drive a car and on the road and on gas only to deal with idiotic cyclists who never abide by any traffic laws ever."

"I for one will not get myself caught in a face to face with another motorists just because the cyclists didn't want to ride his bicycle over a manhole on the side of the street and decides to jolt himself in my lane, sorry but it will not happen, tax payers' money went into making paths for those people and that's where they belong PERIOD!," wrote Francois Brousseau.

"This is sick. We pay a lot of money for our right to have our cars on the road and now we have to get out of the way for cyclist. Sorry...but have cyclists pay for their rights to use the road like the others and maybe I will share. Don't tell me that they are saving the environment …They are killing the economy. People don't spend and that is not good for our economy. Sorry but this is the way I feel," wrote Jocelyne Lacelle.

Me: this, I remind you, is about a law that's always been there -- a yard, or a metre, same diff -- but people's ignorance, or pent-up rage...

I cannot express how great it is and was getting to know you all. I had no idea when I randomly discovered R3 in 2010 what it would become. As a runner, I've logged hundreds of miles/km listening to Craig, Grant, Lana, Vish, Graham, Pedro and others and they have kept me going, from the Sweatin' to the Indies podcast to the Electronica one that I ran a 50k to a few years back.

On the blog you all have become my friends. You have supported me and I've done my best to give back. I am sad this chapter is ending, and nevertheless grateful for R3 and you all. Continue to keep in touch via Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.... I go by "justingrady" on all of them. Hey pals. I start a new job on Monday, so won't likely be able to join in on anything then.

I want to say thank you to each and every one of you. I stumbled upon Radio 3 in the fall of 2009, desperately looking for something better than an all-repeat station. What I didn't know then is that it would bring me so much more than that.

A year later, I moved to Saskatoon for the job I've been at for six years until today. I knew few people here at the time, and that's always a bit isolating. I was glad to have great music to listen to while at work. I believe it was during Lana's show that she mentioned something about commenting on the blog. I went and peeked, and at first didn't comment. But then I did. And I "met" a bunch of awesome, funny, hilarious, kind people. I won a couple things, too, which was cool.

I have been been able to meet quite a few of you - the Saskies of course! Rebbey and AndyJanes (and Alisha) both stayed at my old apartment, I have met Grant and Lana <3, Tim and Lee from Cali, and so many more. I brought a growler of beer to a train station, I went to concerts with pals I hadn't actually met before, and many more random moments have occurred. I also got about 4 text messages when I won the cowichan. KATHY! WOOOO! hahah

I hope to still meet with many more of you and make to RFF and NxNE and other awesome festivals!

A small aside: my love of music caught the attention of my co-worker at the time, whose husband works at the community radio station here. She suggested I volunteer, and since then, I have become a host, host trainer, and board member!

Thank you to all of you for being a part of what was this amazingly connected community. It is the end of a really fantastic era - one that has opened up so many wonderful things to me - I am so grateful. Take great care, all of you! <3

Davoud Davies I can't get on the blog to comment (the site is crashing on the browser on my phone), but it's a doubly sad day.

First, the idiots in the UK have taken over the asylum and decided that leaving the EU is a good idea. Then, to add insult to injury, it's the final day of the blog.

R3 has been a huge part of my life for the last ten years or so. It's provided friendships and a steady stream of great music. I'm really disappointed that the new site will no longer allow listeners outside of Canada to enjoy independent Canadian music

tiffy, perhaps point Davoud to my #142, or copy it, if he feels like sending a real letter to the PM, cc those others.

Tiny issue, but why take Canadian indie music off the international "web-air"? Not good for Canada's reach abroad.

I first stumbled across the precursors to this site when looking for New Pornographers' music. I found the Just Concerts (or was it called Live Concerts?) site. Back then, it was a jumble of different sites: New Music Canada, Roots Music Canada, Live Concerts (pretty sure it was Live Concerts).

Then those merged into the first incarnation of R3. I creates a user account on May 2, 2007 (same day as Moniski, coincidentally) so I could save playlists.

At some point along the way, I realized there was actually a radio stream and hosts and people were posting comments along with the shows (the original collection of sites didn't have that so I wasn't used to coming to the site for that). The rest, as they say, is history.

coincidentally, this old Trivia Tuesday post from 2010 - linked to in the wikia of R3 vernacular - was about people's summers, and it was the first year I actually met R3ers in real life, including Grant, who I met at the On a Cold Road show in March 2010, and then a few years later drove to Bruno for a book thing with him on one of the coldest days of the year in 2013.

The community that developed out of this is pretty astounding.
